Bessie (BJ) Ayars of Elsinboro has joined the Salem Community College Board of Trustees as a gubernatorial appointment.

Ayars is a lifelong resident of Salem County who graduated from Penns Grove High School in 1978 and SCC in 1987. BJ credits SCC with providing experiences and opportunities that would change the direction of her future – the “little school that opened big doors.”

Ayars has served the community for 30 years as an EMT, firefighter, hazmat technician, fire instructor, Community Emergency Response Team program manager, American Red Cross health and safety Instructor and disaster response volunteer. At PSEG Nuclear, she is Emergency Response and Offsite Specialist.

In recognition of her many professional achievements and extensive community involvement, Ayars received SCC's 2019 Distinguished Alumni Award. In addition to serving on the Board of Trustees, she is president of the SCC Alumni Association.
