Katie Severance
Meet the GEC Staff & Faculty
New Jersey based scientific glassblower-artist-educator Katie Severance was first introduced to flameworking at Salem Community College (SCC) where she earned her Scientific Glass Technology, A.A.S. degree in 2011. While at SCC Katie had the opportunity to intern with Princeton University’s scientific glassblower Mike Souza. Beyond her studies in scientific glass, Katie took the opportunity to continue her studies at SCC to study artistic glassblowing with renowned artist Paul J. Stankard.
Katie has worked as a scientific glassblower at Chemglass Life Sciences and AGI North America, where she gained experience fabricating advanced precision glassware. Katie’s education and experience have grown in the artistic glass field by assisting courses instructed by Amber Cowan, Lucio Bubacco, Gianni Toso, and Stephan Peirce, among others. A passionate artist in her own right, Katie creates scientific glass instruments infused with her floral designs, merging her interest in both the scientific and art disciplines served by the flameworking process.
A passionate and effective teacher, Katie is an instructor in the Scientific Glass Technology degree program at SCC, where she inspires and develops the skills of the next generation of scientific glassblowers who serve in positions around the globe in this vital industry. Katie has also instructed workshops at The Studio at the Corning Museum of Glass, Glass Axis, SCC, and will be teaching at the Penland School of Craft in 2025. Katie has been an active member and officer in the American Scientific Glassblowers Society (ASGS). She has presented and demonstrated at the national ASGS Symposium and at the International Flameworking Conference at Salem Community College.
